13th Annual Day-Long Festival of Dance

On Sunday, July 18, the San Diego Area Middle Eastern Dance Association (SAMEDA) presents an exciting faire in celebration of the mystique and beauty of Middle Eastern Dance at the McMillin Events Center at the NTC Promenade. Come learn about this ancient art/culture and see some of the nation's most talented performers. Shop vendor booths with a dazzling supply of beautiful costumes and accessories, music, jewelry and more. Entertainment includes celebrity artists and students.

Ninah Sahar

Ninah Sahar is the director of the highly acclaimed Blue Lotus Dance Company. Her awards and accolades include the SAMEDA Lifetime Achievement Award, acceptance as the first Oriental dancer to perform in the prestigious Nations International Dance Festival, and producer and featured performer of “Magical Motion” instructional video by Atea. Her ongoing research and study have gained her a nearly encyclopedic knowledge of Oriental and regional folkloric dances of North Africa and the Near and Middle East. 

10 am - 12 pm

Moves You Can Use

This workshop will teach you cool regional steps you can add to your Cabaret or Tribal performance, unique fast and slow movements from North Africa, Turkey, the Arabian Peninsula, and India. Touch the roots of belly dance. Learn specific steps from each country and how you can incorporate them into your style of dance. You will sample movements from Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and India. All levels are welcome.

2 - 3 pm

Cymbals, Rhythms, and Movements

Playing cymbals while you dance adds a lot of energy to your performance. You really can learn to play your cymbals and dance at the same time. Learn how to get the best sound from your cymbals, basic cymbal patterns, movements to use with those cymbal patterns and how they work with different rhythms. This class will be customized to match the participants’ skill levels. All levels are welcome.

 

Sabrina

Sabrina has performed for the royal families of the Middle East, as well as headlined in the nightclubs and restaurants of Los Angeles. regional folkloric dances of North Africa and the Near and Middle East. She has worked with the top Middle Eastern musicians in the USA, including Issam Houshan, Gamal Goma, Amir Sofi, Mohamed Salem, and John Bilezikjian. With a foundation in ballet, jazz, and modern dance, she tours nationally and internationally and is the belly dance professor at Cuyamaca College.

12:30 - 1:30 pm

Veil Basics: Shapes, Transitions, and Escape Manuevers

Learn to make beautiful, flowing shapes with smooth transitions. You will learn stationary and traveling moves as well as techniques to elegantly escape a misbehaving veil. Bring a 3-yard rectangular veil. All levels are welcome.

3:30 - 5:30 pm

Gothic Belly Dance

The dramatic and expressive genre of Raks Gothique journeys from slinky vamp to cyber and industrial. Explore the unique styling of belly dance movement set to ambient, classical, dark wave, EBM, New Wave and Industrial music. All levels are welcome.
